“Openness to life grants a swift insight – like a flash of lightning – into the life situation of others. A must: to force the problem from its emotional sting into a clearly conceived intellectual form – and act accordingly.”
Dag Hammarskjöld |

The conference was jointly organized with the Swedish Embassy, the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation and HAC’s member institutes.
In the afternoon of 9 November Deputy-Mayor of The Hague, Mrs. Ingrid van Engelshoven and Prof. Peter Kooijmans (Dutch Minister of State) officially opened the conference, after which Dag Hammarskjöld was commemorated by Dr. Hans Corell (former Under-Secretary-General of The UN) and Dr. Henning Melber (Director of the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation). The conference’s key-note address was held by the Prosecutor of the ICC, Mr. Luis Moreno-Ocampo, followed by a panel discussion with Mme Louise Arbour (President of International Crisis Group and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights), Dr. Sydney Mufamadi (former Minister of Local Government of South Africa) and Hans Corell, moderated by Dr. Sam Mulller, Chair of the HAC.
On the second day of the conference, 10 November, 17 selected papers were presented and discussed in 4 panels. During the coming months speakers’ papers and presentations will be elaborated with the aim to publish a book.
The conference was attended by well over 350 people, which clearly shows the interest in the subject.
